I picked up an Iomega ix2-200d a couple of months back to use in place of my

Hard drive crash during P2V conversion ends happily, eventually.

I was doing a P2V conversion of my laptop many months ago, a Dell D800, into an ESX 3.5 virtual machine. The drive was 60GB was partitioned into two logical drives and all seemed to be going well.

At about 95% of completion the laptop blue-screened. When I rebooted it, the drive would not recognize.

I tried many different boot CD’s to fix boot sectors; retry a Windows XP install, no go! I even put it in an external USB case and tried just to access the data. When I did that I could hear that famous *clicking* and resetting sound. Not good. The drive was toast.

I'd been frustrated by the fact that I could never seem to get the VMware tools to install in my

I set up a test environment way back to be able to test the higher-end features of VMware vSphere 4 as well as ESX 3.5.

vSphere Client RDP Plug-in

I like to find useful tools to help in the vSphere 4 world and one such tool is the vSphere Client RDP Plug-in from the guys over at xtravirt:

http://xtravirt.com/vsphere-client-rdp-plug-in

The plugin adds a context menu item to your right-click when you select a particular VM. Being able to fire off the RDP session directly is a huge time saver in larger environments over time. I'm happy to report that it works as advertised.

Windows 2008 Clustering validation test fails IP config

While setting up 2008 Clustering on vSphere I came across an annoying error saying that I had a duplicate IP on what seemed to be an unknown Ethernet interface.

After some poking around I managed to find a few articles that pointed me in the right direction. The problem is related to Teredo, which is an IPv6 Tunneling Protocol. It allows IPv6 communications to pass through IPv4 NATs and IPv4 servers. It ends up giving an identical IP address to its network interfaces, and that's what causes the problem.

ESX4 host won't update using vSphere Update Manager
